Gas Safe Register
Legally requiredLegally required for anyone working on gas appliances in the UK. Not a badge of quality, a badge of legality: an unregistered gas fitter is committing an offence.
Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering
The professional body for plumbing and heating. Individual membership, so it follows the engineer rather than the company.
TrustMark registered
The only government-endorsed quality scheme for work in and around the home. Covers trading standards as well as technical competence.
Which? Trusted Traders
Assessed by Which? on customer service and business practice, including a credit check and reference calls.

How much does a plumber charge per hour in the UK?
Most charge £40 to £80 an hour, with a higher first-hour call-out rate. London and the South East sit at the top of that range. Emergency and out-of-hours work is typically charged at 1.5x to 2x.
Does my plumber need to be Gas Safe registered?
Only for gas work, but then it is a legal requirement rather than a preference. A plumber fitting a tap does not need it. A plumber touching your boiler does, and you can check their number on the Gas Safe Register yourself.
